The member of the Black Hand gang who threw the grenade at Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, was Nedeljko Cabrinovic. On June 28, 1914, during the archduke's visit to Sarajevo, Cabrinovic attempted to assassinate him by throwing a hand grenade at their motorcade, although it missed and injured other bystanders. Cabrinovic later attempted to commit suicide by ingesting a cyanide pill, but was apprehended by the police.

Nedeljko Cabrinovic was the man who threw the bomb at the Archduke's motorcade. The throw was off and the bomb bounced off the car and it exploded under the next car in the motorcade, disabling the car and wounding 20 people. Cabrinovic then attempted suicide to avoid capture, but was arrested. He was tried and convicted of his crime, but was not executed since he was only 17 and legally considered a child. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. he died of tuberculosis in 1916.
