They broke up the Spanish fleet and sent it fleeing up the channel north, around Scotland and then individual ships finally sailed south back to Spain. Most Spanish ships did not make this journey and crashed on the west of England. There was great loss of life and a great victory for the commander Lord Hawke and Queen Elizabeth I.
