In the original Blue, Red, and Yellow versions, you started off as a new Pokemon trainer in a similar fashion as Ash. Pokemon Silver and Gold versions were originally planned to be an extension of the Blue/Red/Yellow storyline. It occurs years later when the trainers from Blue and Red version have grown up. Blue becomes the 8th gym leader and Red is the strongest trainer in the game.

Red's team is loosely based off of Ash's original team in the TV. show. This could be because the programmers wanted to make players feel closer to the TV version by having them defeat the main character. Red's team, however, could also be based off of Pokemon you receive in Pokemon Yellow. In Pokemon Yellow, you receive a Pikachu to start with, various people give you Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur, a Silph Co. worker gives you a Lapras, and Snorlax must be awakened for the game to progress.

In the end, it is your choice who you believe Red to be. He could be Ash from the television show, he could be Red, the hero from the original games, grown up, or he could be another trainer to defeat.
