Only if the effect actually does inflict damage. No change in lifepoints happens if your, say, Macro Cosmos is destroyed by Mystical Space Typhoon.

In battle, it is the controller of a card that loses the lifepoints. It doesn't matter who has controlled the card the longest, it's the controller during Damage Calculation that counts.
