This is from chapter 14 of the story:
... Even now, in the stillness of death, the huge jaws seemed to be dripping with a bluish flame, and the small, deep-set, cruel eyes were ringed with fire. I placed my hand upon the glowing muzzle, and as I held them up my own fingers smouldered and gleamed in the darkness.
__'Phosphorus,' I said.
The hound appeared to glow due to phosphorous.
The hound was painted with phosphorus. That made it glow in the dark. The sight scared many people wandering the moors at night.
A very subjective question, but I would say - The Hound of the Baskervilles. I agree. That has been made into at least 10 different versions for movies and TV.
No he did not. Watson made the point that Holmes even maintained his clean-shaven appearance while he was living on the moor in 'The Hound of the Baskervilles.'
Stapleton killed Sir Charles Baskerville, by setting his hound on him. The dog was made up to look like a hellhound and it is heavily implied- if not blatently stated? that the dog was starved and possibly beaten. It didn't kill him, though- he saw it and he died of fright, which I think is what Stapleton intended.
Near the beginning of chapter 6, we find the following quote from Sherlock Holmes: ". . . I have made some inquiries myself in the last few days, but the results have, I fear, been negative. One thing only appears to be certain, and that is that Mr James Desmond, who is the next heir, is an elderly gentleman of a very amiable disposition, so that this persecution does not arise from him. I really think that we may eliminate him entirely from our calculations. . . ."
