The first Star Trek series, sometimes referred to as ST:TOS, for Star Trek: The Original Series, ran for three seasons, from 8 September 1966 to 3 June 1969. It was set in the years 2266 to 2269. The first pilot, The Cage, which was filmed near the end of 1964, was rejected by the networks, so a second pilot was written. But because Jeffery Hunter, who played Capt. Christopher Pike in the first pilot, was unavailable, for the second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before, William Shatner was cast as Capt. James T. Kirk instead. The first Star Trek episode to be aired, The Man Trap, was actually the fourth episode filmed after Where No Man Has Gone Before. Most of The Cage became footage in The Menagerie, the only two-part episode of the original series. The Cage was not televised in its entirety until Star Trek's 20th anniversary in 1986.

The second Star Trek series, ST:TAS, short for Star Trek: The Animated Series, starring William Shatner as the voice of Capt. Kirk, ran for a little more than one season, from 8 September 1973 to 12 October 1974.

The third Star Trek series, ST:TNG, short for Star Trek: The Next Generation, starring Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, ran for seven seasons, from 26 September 1987 to 23 May 1994. The setting was in the years 2364 to 2370. All of the five-digit stardates in the first season began with 41, all of the stardates in the second season began with 42, all of the stardates in the third season began with 43, and so on.

The fourth Star Trek series, ST:DS9, short for Star Trek: Deep Space 9, starring Avery Brooks as Lt. Comdr. Benjamin Sisco, overlapped ST:TNG in both setting and actual production. It ran for seven seasons, from 3 January 1993 to 2 June 1999. It was set in the years 2369 to 2375, with the premier episode beginning on Stardate 46379.

The fifth Star Trek series, Star Trek: Voyager, starring Kate Mulgrew as Capt. Kathryn Janeway, also ran for seven seasons, from 16 January 1995 to 23 May 2001. The setting of the first season of ST:VOY was 2371, the year after the setting of the last season of ST:TNG. So the stardates throughout the first season began with 48, and in the seventh season all the stardates began with 54 (and the year was 2377). (The highest-ranked Vulcan on Voyager, Tuvok, was played by Tim Russ, who later played Principal Franklin on iCarly.)

The sixth Star Trek series, Enterprise, starring Scott Bakula as Capt. Jonathan Archer, had the earliest setting of all of the series of Star Trek series (serieses?). The show began in the year 2151, 90 years after the invention of warp drive and 10 years before the incorporation of The United Federation of Planets. The show ran for four seasons, from 25 September 2001 to 13 May 2005.
