First, who is this Sir John Witherspoon? Do you mean the Rev. John Witherspoon (1723-1794)? There is a report--rumor--that Reese With. is related to this minister-in-politics. To claim she is a direct descendent, she would have to trace her ancestry back to a son of the Rev. John, whose name is David Witherspoon. Of the three sons of the Rev. JW who came to America from Scotland, David is the only one who had a son who eventually became a Presby minister. We know very little about him. I doubt if Reese and others claiming descent from the famous John Witherspoon have done the complicated research proving ancestry. Moreover, to complicate matters, there were other families with the name of Witherspoon, or Wetherspoon, or Widerspoon who came to America.
