The pilot episode of Star Trek: TOS was simply called "The Cage" which had Captain Pike in command rather then Captain Kirk.
Chronologically, Captain Jonathan Archer was the captain of the first starship Enterprise in the prequel series Enterprise (2001-2005) However, Captain James T. An earlier captain of the Enterprise NCC-1701 was Captain Christopher Pike, who appeared in the first Star Trek pilot filmed in 1964. Star Trek TOS ("The Original series") actually had two pilots. The first one, "The Cage", the critics felt were a little two cranial for the crowd at the time. The original "The Cage" only had Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock) and Majel Barrett (as the first officer), and none of the other "regular" cast. A second pilot was shot, with the full "regular" cast, called "Where No Man Has Gone Before", which included (if I remember correctly) Kirk in a fistfight, more cowboy style, which they felt would have a better reception in a television lineup with shows like "Gunsmoke".
