Jamestown settlers experienced a period known as "the starving time." Food was so scarce and the mortality rate was high. Some settlers were forced to turn to cannibalism, and eating horses, dogs, cats and mice in an effort to survive. Stress levels were high - they were required to find a way to make money for those who financed the colony in order to remain. Some settlers are believed to have gone with the aboriginals to live, probably in order to survive, or were taken by them. The colony experienced attacks by the aboriginals. Of 104 men and boys who landed there, by January the next year, only 38 were still living. Their water contained salt and arsenic. Winters were extremely harsh, with droughts during crop-growing seasons. The colonists were plagued with diseases and fevers. They experienced much misery. Trade was near to impossible and the their fort was under siege. Having not been there, we can only imagine the Horror they experienced in order to be part of the New World we now know as the United States of America.
