I have read books 1-3, so I believe that he thinks that way he doesn't know if Poseidon is disappointed, and also that he can be his own person. Poseidon definitely likes Percy, and helps him along his quest silently, and protecting him.
just Percy
In the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Perseus Jackson is Poseidon's son. However, in the original Greek Mythology Perseus was the son of Zeus, God of the Sky.
Percy's dad is Poseidon, and since the Big Three (him, Hades, and Zeus) made that pact to stop having children, it would be very bad if he went to visit his demigod son because he was with Percy and Sally(Percy's mom) for so much time that he was beginning to forget his godly duties so Zeus ordered Poseidon away from Percy. Poseidon has seen Percy, but as a baby. Percy can barely remember that since he was so young, but he says he remembers his dad looking down at him. And Poseidon has seen Percy during times throughout the series.
The trident is Poseidon's symbol of power and is usually associated with him. Since Percy is Poseidon's son, it can also represent him.
Percy Jackson is the son of Poseidon, and Poseidon's the king of the sea which basically means he controls the water so... Percy probably can control water.

Poseidon feels protective and proud of Percy, as he is his son and a powerful demigod. This is evident in the ways Poseidon supports Percy on his quests, communicates with him through dreams or visions, and offers guidance and assistance when needed.
