Frankenstein did not read the books. It was the 'monster.' But the four books were Paradise Lost, a volume of Plutarch's Lives, the Sorrows of Werter, and I guess you could consider the fourth to be Volney's Ruins of Empires. (Found in Chapter 12 & 15)

At this time, Victor is a student of "natural philosophy", which involves chemistry and other science. Also of note: Victor Frankenstein is the creator of the monster, which is called the "creature" for much of the time in the novel. The creature has no name.

I thought that the monster was dumb but on reading the book he was quite eloquent and could even read.

He may have read Marco Polo and Henry the Navigator. Since he was the first to travel by ship looking for Asia there weren't any others to read.
