No, he was a follower at first, then he quit. He is a triple agent. Everyone thinks he is on Dumbledore's side but voldemort thinks he is on his side but he really is on Dumbledore's side. He was a die hard Death Eater at first but he was in love with Harry's mom and after Voldemort killed her and Harry's dad then he joined Dumbledore to do right what he had done by looking after her son but he act as though he hates Harry because Harry looks like his dad and his dad and Snape were enemies at school.

No he only pretended to be as stated in the 7th book. Well he used to be, but changed sides when found out that Voldemort was going to kill Lily Potter (and her family, but that did not matter to Snape).

Snape is truly a sarcastic, vindictive, spiteful bully, and he really did hate Harry, but he was on Dumbledore's side and did everything he could to help defeat Voldemort. When he was younger (18 - 21) he was one of Voldemort's Death Eaters, but when Voldemort murdered Lily Potter (Harry's mom), whom he loved, he switched sides and was forevermore loyal to Dumbledore. He and Harry's dad were enemies at school, and then Harry's dad (James Potter) married the girl he loved (Lily). So he hated Harry, because Harry looked like James and was a product of James and Lily's love, which was very painful for him. After joining forces with Dumbledore, Snape pretended to still be a loyal Death Eater, so he could spy on Voldemort for Dumbledore.

Dumbledore arranged his own "murder" with Snape. Over the summer between the 5th and 6th books, Dumbledore went looking for the ring Voldemort had stolen from his grandfather Marvolo Gaunt (well, actually, he stole it from his uncle Morfin Gaunt, who inherited it after Marvolo died), and which had originally belonged to Salazar Slytherin. Voldemort had made the ring into a Horcrux and put a curse on it.

What Voldemort didn't know was that the black stone in the ring was actually one of the Deathly Hallows -- the Resurrection Stone. Dumbledore had never gotten over the death of his baby sister Ariana, who was killed by a spell during the fight Dumbledore's brother Aberforth had with Dumbledore's friend, Gellert Grindelwald. Even though he knew the ring was probably cursed, he just couldn't resist touching the stone, because he wanted to see his sister again so badly.

Dumbledore immediately found Snape, and Snape was able to contain the curse in Dumbledore's hand. If Snape hadn't done this in time, the curse would have spread to the rest of Dumbledore's body and killed him fairly quickly. But even though Snape was able to contain the curse, Dumbledore was still doomed: he had only about a year to live.

So, since Voldemort was already planning to make Draco Malfoy kill Dumbledore, Dumbledore decided to ask Snape to kill him instead. Dumbledore knew that Voldemort didn't really expect Draco to succeed at killing him; Draco's parents had fallen out of favor with Voldemort, and Voldemort just wanted to heap more misery onto the family, by making them watch their son fail at the task and be killed for it. And even if Draco was able to kill him, Dumbledore didn't want Draco's soul to be damaged by murder. Also, if Snape killed Dumbledore, it would seemingly prove his loyalty to Voldemort, and ensure his continuing worth as an adept and loyal Death Eater.

No, Severus Snape stopped being a death eater before Harry was born. He pretended to be a death eater, spying on the order of the phoenix. He was actually a member of the order spying on the death eaters.

Was snape always on peter pettigews side?

Severus Snape was on Peter Pettigrew's "side" for a short amount of time. As you probably know, Snape was a true Death Eater and worker for Voldemort for a short amount of time. Snape was a Death Eater for Voldemort until he found out that Voldemort was after the Potter family. Snape immediately went back to Dumbeldore and asked for forgiveness. From then on Snape became a double agent, meaning he worked for Dumbeldore and Voldemort, he told Voldemort false news about "Dumbeldore's Side" and true news to Dumbeldore. Because Pettigrew was on Voldemort's side for a while, he was on at the same time as Snape, but only for about a month or so.

Voldemorts spells didn't work on the other children because Harry was willing to die for them. Even if he didn't die he meant to so it was like Harry's mother dieing for him. Why did Severus Snape have the same patronus as Lily Potter?

Wizards' Patronuses can sometimes change shape. Severus Snape loved Lily (Evans) Potter and so his patronus changed shape to the same one as Lily, a doe. It is very likely that Snape's patronus didn't actually change shape and was always a doe since he had loved Lily all his life.
