Emily Carr was born in Victoria, British Columbia; moved to study art in San Francisco in 1890 and then traveled to England in 1899 to continue her studies. Then in 1910 she studied in Paris and moved back to British Columbia in 1911 where she studied First Nations cultures of B.C. and Alaska. She was known by her fellow artists as 'Mother of Modern Art' and she was most famous for her paintings of totem poles and trees.
