Banana Fish, TW for lots of r@pe, human trafficking, and lots gang violence, also for ped0ph3l1a and drugs. (this one is my personal favorite and comfort anime)

Tokyo ghoul isn't really sad, but it made me cry, TW for bl00d, tons of violence, and torture.

Grave Of The Firleflies, TW for war (haven't seen but it's rumored to be really good)

It includes no TWs, so Google them first. Elfen Lied is really dark and gory if you plan on watching that, and I'm pretty sure there's a scene where they attack a dog, so be careful if that makes you uncomfortable. As boring as it sounds, the best place to get information about anime is typically through the computer. Ask around if you have any friends of family members that are into anime. Visit online forums that discuss all different types of anime. Create an account on these sites and post questions on the forums asking for anime that is particularly sad. The community is very embracing and will more than likely assist you in all the ways you need.
