Jean Baptiste, specifically Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, is often recognized as the first permanent non-Indigenous settler of what would become Chicago, Illinois. He sailed from France, as he was born in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) to a French father and an African mother, and later moved to the French territories in North America. His contributions were significant in the early development of the region.
