Philippe II, known as Philippe-Auguste had a quite long reign (42 years) and that helped him achieve his domination over vasts portions of the French territory. He manged to fight sucessfully against Richard the Lionheart and John Lackland, and restored much of the English king's possessions to France. The apex of his reign was his victory in Bouvines, in July 1214, in which he managed to defeat a powerful coalition. To some historians, the support he got from French cities in the battle of Bouvines, marks the beginning of national sentiment in France.
At the end of his reign, royal possessions and the territories under the French king's influence were vastly extended, and the influence of French barons had greatly decreased during the same time.
Philip II of Macedon was called "Augustus" to signify his elevated status and authority as a ruler. The term "Augustus," meaning "venerable" or "majestic," was used to convey respect and honor, often associated with divine or imperial connotations. This title helped to establish Philip's legitimacy and reinforce his power over Macedonia and its territories, particularly as he expanded his kingdom. It set a precedent for the use of similar titles by later rulers, including Roman emperors.
