It is not a ball but rather a pineapple
In 1823 a young student of Rugby School, Warwickshire England was playing football (Soccer) In those days you were allowed to hack (kick the legs from under a player with the ball) and actually handle the ball. The ball would have to be carried backwards to the team mates and past that way. However, William Webb Ellis decided that he would NOT retreat with the ball but carry it forwards toward the opposing goal line. The Rugby World Cup is named after William Webb Ellis who is is claimed started the game off by running forward with the ball in hand.
while playing football in 1823, William Webb Ellis caught the ball in his arms… and on catching the ball, instead of retiring backwards, which was the rule in the game at that time, rushed forwards with the ball in his hands towards the opposite goal'.
Many people believe that the game of rugby was created in 1823 when, one, William Webb Ellis 'with fine disregard for the rules of football, as played in his time at Rugby school, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the game of Rugby'.
The game known as football in Canada and the US is said to have originated at Rugby, a school in England, when William Webb Ellis picked up a soccer ball and ran the length of the field with it in 1823.
1823, by William Webb Ellis at Rugby School, England when the football was picked up by webb Ellis who broke the rules of the time and ran forward instead of retreating carrying the ball. The game of Rugby Football was formalised January 26th 1871 and was attended by 21 clubs at the Pall Mall Restaurant in London's Regent Street.
It was first developed in England - In 1823, during a game of soccer at Rugby School in Warwickshire, England, 16 year old William Webb Ellis, in fine disregard for the rules, picked up the ball and ran with it.
The concept started in 1823 at Rugby School in Warwickshire, England. There they played a game similar to soccer (football). In the game the ball could kicked as seen in normal football, tackles were allowed as seen in football but this included "hacking" which in-effect was kicking the legs from beneath the player. The ball was also allowed to be carried. However, this is where the game suddenly changed. William Web Ellis a student of the school technically broke the ball carrying rule. The rule in places was the ball could be picked up BUT the ball carrier had to retire back toward their own players to make a pass either for mare players to carryy the ball or to allow a player to kick the ball ahead and start the attack. Ellis actually picked up the ball and ran forward in breach of this rule but he actually then passed the ball backward for another player to take on the attack. This is where the story of webb Ellis picking up the ball and running comes from in the story. The new carrying concept continued as students went off to university etc and took the game with them. Circa 1845 and the Football association was formed and removed a number of the existing rules. such as hacking and handing the ball. A group broke away and formed the RFU - Rugby Football Union which it is still called to day.
