There isn't much difference between the houses:
Gryffindors are brave, bold, and daring and aren't really all brawn and no brains just look at Hermione. Though a Gryffindor can be a bit of a show-off or bragger and might be choosey, like a Slytherin, at who might just be better than the other, but they are still loyal and stick up for each other.
Hufflepuffs are trustworthy, loyal, just kind, fair and have too many myths going around about them. First it is not true that they are not the cleverest of the bunch or the weakest. They don't like to shoot their mouths off and shouldn't be messed with. Though it is true that they aren't the best Quidditch players or aren't always the cleverest but they still are the friendliest. They are one house that doesn't always judge
Ravenclaws are clever, witty, resourceful, creative, wise, and intelligent but too many are considered odd balls. Yeah Ravenclaw might produce an eccentrics from here to there but they aren't as judge-y as a Gryffindor or Slytherin. Some (even Ravenclaws) think that most if not all outstanding achievers come from Ravenclaw. Although many do there are many who come from Hufflepuff and Slytherin too.
Slytherins are cunning, clever, maybe even wise. Not all Slytherins are bad every house has contributed to their fair share of death eaters and you don't have to come from a long line of magical folk just to be in Slytherin. They do play to win which may not always be fair and they may brag. Even though you think that every Slytherin may be shallow or run away from their problems they can also hold their ground and stick up for each other.
As you can see Gryffindors and Slytherins can both be choosy with the elite or even who's in their house. Slytherins and Ravenclaws can both be clever so even a Claw can come up with a cheat. Claws and Puffs don't really judge. Gryffindors and Slytherins can both be braggers or show-offs. All the houses can be misunderstood and have all produced a rotten egg from time to time. Don't let a few differences get in the way try to find things in common with other people it's better that way. See the houses aren't so different after all.
The four houses are named after the founders of Hogwarts, Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff and Salazar Slytherin who were all brilliant wizards. The houses appear to be famous because nearly all of the characters in the book have at some point attended Hogwarts and been around these houses.
