Whitney Houston was a very important entertainer during the 1980s and 1990s. She had eleven number one songs, was nominated for (and won) a Grammy award, and starred in a successful movie, the Bodyguard. She was admired and loved by millions of fans. Her version of the Star Spangled Banner also had an impact, and after 9/11, it was reissued, and greeted once again with great enthusiasm. Unfortunately, her problems with drugs and alcohol cut her career and her life short, but to her fans, she had a very important role in popular music. As for her role in the larger society, that is more difficult to say, since only a few popular singers tend to be remembered decades later-- Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson are two good examples. Whether Whitney Houston will attain that stature remains to be seen.
