Well he obviously wasn't aware of the presence of moon-letters and probably never thought to hold it up against the moon. I mean, who would? Elrond is more knowledgeable and perhaps had experience with these. I would say that Thorin is less observant and knowledgeable.
Stay on the path, be nice to Elves, and make sure you have a wizard and hobbit. You will be walking or riding ponies for most of the way...... and remember to bring something you can use to fight off giant spiders!
They do have quite a happy tone. The hobbit race have a lot to be happy about. They live in a beautiful land with a peaceful culture. This is probably to make up for their relatively small stature.
Yes and no, The Hobbit was written before The Lord of the Rings. When Tolkien's publishers asked for a sequel to The Hobbit he gave them The Lord of the Rings with much more detail than The Hobbit. Then to make the two stories agree he had to go back and edit parts of the original Hobbit. The Hobbit involves Gandalf the wizard along with Bilbo Baggins and how the ring came into his possession. So yes it is part of The Lord of the Rings universe and series but it's not technically one of the six Lord of the Rings books. Those books were published in three volumes, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.
cuz he did
They did not expect that the film would be of interest to the general public and make money.

In 'The Hobbit', the elves are described as a fun-loving people. While the dwarves approach Rivendell, the elves sing taunting songs at them, but Tolkien also mentions several times that they are very wise. Elrond is described as 'as kind as summer', among other things. So I would think that the elves do not take things too seriously, value kindness, but also wisdom, and some (the Elvenking of Mirkwood, for example) value their privacy and secrecy. Craftsmanship also seems important, as does music. The Elvenking also seemed very proud. In 'The Lord of the Rings', the descriptions of the elves make them seem far more 'serious', with less of the merrymaking described in 'The Hobbit'.
they discovered the first way of purifying water

The Romans adopted the medical knowledge and practice of the Greeks. They did not make any significant discovery, but they improved herbal preparations and surgical tools.
To make light of, to play around with, to not take seriously.

If you have made a not so important discovery, you should always belive it will be very important in the future. This is why people make autobiography. The schools might learn about you instead of columbus.
We're not sure at this moment, but I have heard that they might make one.
