Counters are some form of marker placed on a card by an effect.
A counter has no inherent rules -a counter only does something when another card says it does.
Counters have different names simply to distinguish each other. So for example if a card gains a Spell Counter, that counter can't be treated as a Bushido Counter.
So take Gateway of the Six. When a Six Samurai is Normal or Special Summoned, then you place two markers on Gateway of the Six. These markers are called Bushido Counters. They don't 'do' anything special, unless a card says they do. In this case, Gateway of the Six itself has a series of effects that lets it remove those Bushido Counters as a cost to activate.
