This is most extensively used in videography, as it is the technology that allows the TV weatherman to appear in front of the weather maps. It is also extensively used in movies.

∙ 11y agoIt is a device that is used on TV news programs. It projects a different background behind the person on the air. For example, one time when I was a guest on a news program on PBS, I was broadcasting from a studio in a suburb of Boston, in a very simple room with a camera and a technician. But that is not what the viewers saw. They saw a beautiful scene behind me-- the skyline of Boston, the Charles River, and sailboats. I can assure you I was not on a sailboat nor was my studio anywhere near the river, but that is the magic of the chroma key device.
If the guest is actually in the studio with the anchor, no chroma key special effects are needed. But if there is a "split screen" with the guest in one city and the host in another, the special effects project a much nicer background and make it seem as if the guest is someplace scenic. This makes the TV appearance more visually appealing.
