Dracula was a knight in The Order of the Dragon, a Christian order that was dedicated to keeping the Turks from over-running Europe. (see link) His Father was also of the same order and was known as Dracu (the dragon) Dracula means son of the dragon.
After one battle Dracula returned home to find that his beloved had committed suicide. Apparently the Turks had gotten news to her (before his return) that he had died in battle and she couldn't live without him. At this very un-opportune moment the priest chose to announce that she, as a suicide, couldn't be buried in a Christian grave-yard and that her soul was condemned to hell - at which Dracula cursed God and drank blood. Shortly afterwards Dracula was known as a vampire.
From this is it easy to see why Dracula is much conflicted over religion, is unable to look at a crucifix. This, by the way, was a trait unique to Dracula and is not universal to all vampires. So if you are confronted by a vampire don't rely on a crucifix to save you. That only works on Dracula and he's already destroyed.

Why can't Dracula see himself in a picture?
Vampires are thought to be unholy creatures, and silver is thought in some way to be a holy metal (hence, fatal to werewolves, for example). Silver therefore does not cooperate with vampires. So a mirror which has a reflective coating of silver does not reflect a vampire, and a photograph which depends upon the light sensitive chemical silver iodide will not form the image of a vampire. However, this doesn't apply to all pictures. There would be no apparent impediment to painting a portrait of Dracula.
How are Whitby and Dracula linked?
Whitby is closely associated with Dracula because Bram Stoker who wrote the original novel spent time in the town while on holiday there during the summer of 1890. While he was there he was researching and writing a novel that would eventually become Dracula. The most important piece of information Stoker found while staying in Whitby was in a document he found in Whitby library, An Account of the Principalities of Wallacia and Moldavia by William Wilkinson. This document contained a reference to a 15th Century prince who had earned himself the nickname 'Dracula'. In a way, Whitby can be seen as Dracula's birth place. Not only did Stoker spend time in Whitby himself, he also set a significant part of Dracula in the town and used it as the place Dracula first steps ashore in England in the form of a big black dog which jumps from a ship called The Demeter which had run aground in Whitby. According to Bram Stoker's original novel, Dracula, the Count has pale fine skin, hooked nose, bright red lips and pointed teeth with black eyes. Of lean build and dressed in full black. i believe that cuz so many people watch the vampire diaries i believe they will be bringing a season 5 and even a 6 and 7 if we can keep the rates up :). I first read Dracula when I was 15. I think that, from that age, it can be understood. I don't think it would ordinarily appeal to anyone younger. The unusual way it has been written, in the form of journals of the characters in the book, is very interesting, and it certainly intrigued me when I first read it.
