Snape was an only child and his dad left when he was a baby, so he was raised by his mother. He had a continually growing interest in the dark arts as a child and as soon as his powers became apparent he did all sorts of things with his magic.
He lived near harry's mother Lily and her sister Petunia and spied on them almost every day because he had a really big crush on lily.
When they met eventually as kids, Snape showed Lily his powers and also showed her that she had the same magical powers and how to use them.
Snape really didn't like Petunia and played a prank on them and Lily found out and she was really mad, so him and Lily didn't speak for years.
They went to Hogwarts together and became friends again. Lily didn't approve of the people Snape hung around with at school and vice versa, so their friendship dropped again.
Snape always had deep love for Lily, but she only ever saw him as a friend.
Lily then started to date James (harry's dad) and Snape really loathed him - people thought he was jealous of James' talent on the Quidditch Pitch, but it was of a very horrible prank that James, Sirius, Lupin and Wormtail played on him while they were at school, which would have resulted in his death, if James hadn't stepped in at the last moment before it happened.
Snape doesn't like Harry for many reasons - he gets away with anything and seems to get special treatment from the teachers because it's "famous Harry Potter"
He is James' son and Snape hated James.
Snape was jealous of the fact that Lily chose James over him.
But in the end, Snape really was a good guy - hence why Harry and Ginny named one of their kids after him!
