Down A Dark Hall
By : Lois Duncan
Down a Dark Hall written by Lois Duncan is a book about a girl named Kit Gordy, going to a boarding school miles away from the closest town, which is a small village Blackwood. She comes to her new home for the school year with her new step father Dan and her worrying mother, who are ready to go on their honeymoon. When they see the boarding school that Kit would be staying at, it looked surprisingly different from what they saw in the brochure they were given. The three of them could not at first find the word to describe the house until Kit found the one word that could easily describe how it looked, which was the one word no one wanted to hear before they drop her off in a strange school evil. After her new father and her concerned mother left on their honeymoon she meets one of the staff members, Natalie who comes from the village Blackwood. Natalie tells her that the boarding school used to belong to an old man who lost his family in a fire. On the next day only three more students come to the boarding school. They are Lynda, Ruth, and Sandy. They are going to be the only other students who will be joining Kit during the school year. The faculty and the student's relationships become sour towards the end of the book. The book contains many characters that are well written and are important for the book to be able to catch a reader's interest.
The characters of Down a Dark Hall are very interesting, especially Kit who is still getting over the death of her father when she was seven. Now her mother got married to a nice regular guy Dan who just wants the best for both of them. Madam Duret who is the head of the school has a mysterious past from two former private schools in Europe. Professor Farley comes from one of the private schools that Madam Duret taught at also with a small number of students. Sandy was the first student after Kit to arrive at the school. She has a weird experience with a person that is not actually there, according to Kit in the story. The other two fellow students both come from a boarding school, but not the one that Madam Duret had taught in Europe, they are Ruth and Lynda. Ruth is the brainy, plain looking girl while her best friend Lynda is just the opposite, a dumb blond. Jules is the son of Madam Duret, who is the love interest for the girls while attending at Blackwood. Nancy is Kit's best friend. She writes many letters but they seem never to get delivered. This book is not just about interesting characters that are very different from each other, but has a theme and setting use in many other books.
Down a Dark Hall was written in the seventies but sounds like a book that could have been written today. Blackwood is the village, where the large private home turned private school, where the story takes place. Blackwood is a regular small town with nothing unusual about it until a man believes his family is still with him, even when they die years ago in a fire. The town becomes shook up when the old man dies, then weird stuff happens because the place is cursed. The mystery or theme of the story is who should I trust and what makes this place so creepy and unusual? Lois Duncan does a great job describing the fear or the misunderstanding of the students at Blackwood from the unexplained occurrences. The girls throughout the story are looking for answers to the mysteries of the school and why were they chosen.
Down a Dark hall written by Lois Duncan is not her best book but overall I believe that it is a good book that should be read by anyone looking for a good book. If you want a book full of mystery about the unexplained this book might be just for you. I was disappointed about the timing of the mystery being solved because I think it should have been more towards the ending. Lois Duncan is a good writer, but I am not a fan of her work, but some of her books I really enjoy. I have to say that I enjoy I Know What You Did Last Summer and Killing Mr. Griffin more then this book. If you have seen the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer then you think it is just like the slasher film but you have been tricked by Hollywood because the book is a lot more different. It is more of a thriller plus a mysterious plot. Killing Mr. Griffin another book that is worth checking out is about when a group of kids who want to teach their teacher a lesson but instead Mr. Griffin dies mysteriously over night. Down a Dark Hall I wouldn't buy but I still recommend this book if you are a fan of a good mystery or any of Lois Duncan's written work.
