Red Nichols' given name was Ernest Loring Nichols.

Nichols was born on May 8, 1905. He was a child prodigy who was playing cornet professionally before his teen years. He led a number of different bands; the most famous was called Red Nichols and his Five Pennies, making a play on the pronunciation of his last name ("nickels").

Nichols' favorite style was Dixieland but interestingly many musicians in his bands would later become famous during the Swing Era, including Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Gene Krupa.

Nichols' career entered a deep slump during the 1940s but picked up again as small-group jazz once again gained popularity following the big-band years. Sadly he died of a heart attack on June 28, 1965 at the comparatively young age of 60.
