Armour, also written armour and referred to as body armour, is a type of protective gear that has evolved with the advent of lighter protective materials. The gambeson is a full-body armour constructed of quilted linen or wool that covers the entire body.

Knights changed their armour gradually from mail coat to plate armour, and in the 12th century they started to wear helmets that covered their whole head instead of the mail hood and the 'hat-like' helmets. The lower ranks did not wear any armour until centuries later. Most served in their everyday clothes with at best a leather jacket and skull cap for some extra protection.

A beaver generally protected the front part of the torso on a suit of armor, often referred to as the breastplate or cuirass. It was designed to protect the vital organs located in the chest area during battles.
They weren't. A knight needed a horse that was not as heavy and could maneuver in battle. The knight's horse was trained to carry him knee to knee with the knight next to him. As if in a long line of armour. So, the horse was controlled with the legs and they were a special horse not for everyday riding. The suit of armour was about 45 pounds so not as heavy as it has been pictured ( today's army carries more weight) and it was an expensive item to own ( in today's standards the cost of armour was like the cost of a 5 bedroom house today).
