Raphael was young, rich, out-going Person, and well as being enormously talented. Him and Leonardo and Michelangelo, is considered one of the three Great Names of the High Renaissance in Italy. His work is characterized by perfect use of color, balance of composition, and sweetness in the subjects of his paintings. His early death brought about what came to be acknowledged as the end of the Italian Renaissance.Pope Julius II Invited Raphael to Rome in 1508 where he was Hired to complete the fresco decoration of a number of rooms in the Vatican. The best known of this is The school of Athens.Considered to be one of the greatest gems of miniature paintings, this Madonna was painted for Alfonso di Diamenti a friend of Raphaels. The Virgin stands in open air reading, while the child touches and looks into the same book Mary is dressed in Marian colors: red tunic and blue mantle with hood over her head. The child's playfulness reflects ease and security in his mother's arms. The pretty landscape in the background suggests the passage from winter to spring.

The painting was sold by Count Scipione Connestabile to the Empress of Russia in 1871.

In the late 1504s Raphael moved to Florence where he met with Leonardo and greatly affected his style. changing his sense of color, Raphael attempted to match color and light; light and shadow, he created the impression of movement and action. This is what Vasari calls the "dolcezza ne' colori unita," the sweet harmony of colors.

Reason 1#.... He was the greatest designer of the Renaissance. Raphael influenced painters up to the 1900's. He made people think of personality when they looked at his paintings.
