In order to regain the honour lost when he was exiled, the Cid began a military campaign to rid Spain of the moors. he fought and won many battles, the most prominent of which was the conquest of valencia. in order to appease alfonso, he sent him many gifts from the spoils he won in his triumphs. as Spain was characterised by a gift economy at this time, alfonso was obliged to reciprocate, and eventually recalled the cid from exile. however the cid's fame was so great by this time that alfonso in fact benefitted from this rapprochement. later the cid was exiled again and fought for the moors. he died in 1099
