To be honest, it varies a LOT, but I'll try my best to be helpful.

Science Fiction is generally of two key categories: dystopian or optimistic. But in general, the latter is more true.

For example, TV shows like Star Trek and Doctor Who, which are classic and at the very root of Sci Fi culture, are all about the spirit of exploration and discovery, thus presenting an optimistic viewpoint.

In these shows, characters meet people of other species and races, make new technology, see new planets, travel across galaxies, resolve conflicts, and resultantly learn valuable lessons about both themselves and the world around them. So what's the message? There's always more out there, because the world is constantly evolving. Life is worth exploring.

Hope this helps! If you're writing an essay, don't use my words exactly because that's technically plagiarism, but maybe it'll give you a starting place. And if you're just curious about all this awesome and nerdy stuff, well good for you! ^.^
