John Everett Millais formed a third of the Pre-raphaelite brotherhood with William Holman-Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rosetti. The Pre-raphaelites reverted back to the classical era, illustrating the stories of Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as Medieval tales, legends, mythology and even Shakespeare's plays. They focused on the true representation of nature, believing nature should be painted from life, exactly as it is in reality. They wanted to capture the beauty of nature in paint. Millais famously spent 4 years painting the apple blossoms in his painting 'Spring', sitting for just 2 weeks a year in the same spot, as apple blossoms only blossom for 2 weeks. Millais later progressed to painting more contemporary subjects, such as 'The Black Bruswicker' (beautiful-famous for his fabric folds) and paintings of children, such as 'Bubbles' (his son). 'Bubbles' was bought by the art collector and business man Lord Lever Hulme, and used to advertise the soap he produced in his factory at Port Sunlight. He built and dedicated an art gallery to his late wife called the Lady Lever Art Gallery. This gallery houses the largest collection of Pre-raphaelite paintings in Europe.
