Adlai Stevenson II was an American politician and lawyer who served as the Governor of Illinois from 1949 to 1953 and was the Democratic Party's nominee for President of the United States in 1952 and 1956. Known for his articulate speeches and intellectual approach, he was a prominent figure in the mid-20th century Democratic Party. Stevenson advocated for civil rights, international cooperation, and social justice, but lost both presidential elections to Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower. He later served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 1961 until his death in 1965.
