Because he believed in his faith and what that faith called for him to do. He spoke the truth and was killed for it. His death was a terrible lesson of what happens to faith when it leaves the safety of the church and enters real life, especially real political life.

Fourth Archbishop of San Salvador, Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez (15 Aug 1917 - 24 Mar 1980) was declared a martyr by Pope Francis on 03 Feb 2015. Assassinated while offering mass, he spoke out about poverty, social injustice, assassinations and torture. The magazine, A Different View (2008), included him among its 15 Champions of World Democracy.
