The OP is both correct and incorrect....
The dogs name IS Fred - as LittleRicky always "names [his] pets after the people [he] loves". And the episode (#165 :: "Little Ricky Gets a Dog") did air in 1957. *BUT* he did not get him after they moved to their country home. We know this because, if you remember, there was an issue with the lease on their apartment (which said "no pets!). Although Fred/Ethel had been lenient and overlooked all the other pets Little Ricky had acquired (turtles, fish, a frog, & birds).... a grumpy new tenant makes keeping the noisy new puppy, a big problem. After Fred orders them to get rid of the puppy, Lucy tries to hide him... but is eventually discovered. In the end, Fred decides he'd "rather live with a little dog, than a big grouch!"
Interesting fact.. This episode takes place only a few episodes before they move to the country, and is the first in which Lucy mentions moving out there.
