Generically a "diamond jubilee" is the 60th anniversary of some event (birthday, wedding, coronation, foundation of something) where the participants in the event are still in existence (alive in the case of jubilees associated with people). In essence the jubilee happens on the date of the original event but in the case of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, people are celebrating over the whole YEAR of her accession to the throne (6 February 1952).
According to Wikipedia: In Commonweath countries such as England, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, the platinum jubilee is celebrated when a person or event reaches 70. In South Asia countries such as India and Pakistan the platinum event is celebrated at 75 years or weeks. In the USA, the term is not used. Instead the term 'diamond jubilee' is used to mark an event that reaches the 75 mark.
The 125th jubilee is called a quasquicentennial jubilee. Jubilee is an anniversary of an event usually celebrated during the 25th, 50th, or 75th year.

The word Jubilee comes from the Hebrew word "Jobel" which translates to ram's horn. A jubilee is a 25th anniversary celebration of an event.

Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Year. On 22 September 1896, Victoria surpassed George III as the longest reigning monarch in English, Scottish, and British history. The Queen requested all special public celebrations of the event to be delayed until 1897, to coincide with her Diamond Jubilee. Queen Victoria's visit to Sheffield was just one of these events.
