What is now The Walt Disney Company was founded in 1923 in Los Angeles by Walt Disney and his brother Roy as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio.
Walt Disney created a silent animated film titled Alice's Wonderland in early 1923 via the Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri. That studio went bankrupt; the earliest production of the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio was a series of animated shorts called The Alice Comedies, also premiering in 1923.
Mickey Mouse made his debut in 1928. While the studio considers Steamboat Willie to be his official debut, it was preceded by two other films, Plane Crazy and The Gallopin' Gaucho, neither of which found distribution. Steamboatalso is historically the first cartoon with synchronized sound!
