he was arrested by the metis and then he tried to escape and injured a metis officer !

He then threatened to kill members of the government if he was released, which is what the government wanted to do. That lead to a conviction of treason and eventually his execution.

In death he was used by Canada to vilify the provisional government, call their actions those of a rebellion, and justify their military domination of a British Colony located within their recently acquired Rupert's Land.
