Ruth Elizabeth (Bette) Davis was born April 5, 1908 in Lowell, Massachusetts to Harlow Morrell and Ruth Augusta (Favor) Davis. After Miss Davis' father, a patent attorney, abandoned the family about 1915, Bette's mother, Ruthie, relocated the family from Lowell to Newton, Massachusetts, sent her daughters Bette and Barbara ("Bobby") to a boarding school in the Berkshires, in 1921 relocated again to New York City, where she worked very hard as a portrait photographer, to afford the tuition to send Bette to the private & prestigious Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.

Bette may also have attended some other schools, private and public, including Newton High School in Newton, Massachusetts, in the years before and between the boarding schools and Cushing, from where she would probably have graduated in 1926.

For her acting training, Davis attended the Robert Milton-John Murray Anderson School of the Theatre & Dancein Manhattan beyween 1927-28, the same school later attended by Lucille Ball. At that school, Davis also studied dance and movement under modern dance pioneer Martha Graham. Davis was considered the Milton-Anderson School's most gifted student at that time.
