When did Harry Potter get his invisibility cloak?

Harry received it for Christmas in his first year at Hogwarts from the headmaster Albus Dumbledore (although he didn't know it at the time). Dumbledore had borrowed it when the Potter's were killed and returned it to Harry as the true heir.

It was handed down from father to son for generations. It is one of the Deathly Hallows.

Albus Dumbledore anonymously gave Harry Potter the invisibility cloak for Christmas in his first year. The cloak previously belonged to James Potter and had been passed through the generations.

During his youth, Dumbledore had become fascinated by the hallows and intended to find all three of them. When he learned that James owned the actual cloak of invisibility Dumbledore asked to borrow it so he could study. Sadly, Lily and James were murdered before it could be returned so he gave it to Harry instead.

Dumbledore spent years feeling guilty and wondering if James and Lily could have been saved if they'd had the cloak. Harry tells him not to because there wouldn't have been enough time and that Voldemort wouldn't have stopped.
