because he was bored of Italy and was hunted by the mafia for stealing a loaf of bread.

It wasn't boredom; he feared for his life. Leonardo generated an incredible amount of jealousy among his contemporaries, and fear, because of his multi-tiered genius, and because there was no one like him. He grew weary of defending himself, and fled his home in Florence and effectively was homeless for about a year, before Francis I invited him to France. He was anonymous in his travels, using many pseudonyms to avoid people's wrath. Not only was he gifted in the arts and sciences, but was magnificently handsome and possessed a stunning singing voice. This left everyone nearly apopleptic with jealousy. He was also homosexual, and that has never been an acceptable lifestyle to Italians, generally speaking.
