The author explores the themes of cowardice throughout the novel. At the beginning of Private Peaceful, one of the brothers called Tommo, has to start school. In the book, Tommo says "I dread what I'm going to...'. This quote shows that Tommo is a really nervous character at the beginning of the novel. One of Tommo's biggest fears at his new school is one of the teachers called Mr Munnings, as his elder brother, Charlie has told him all about their horrid head teacher, that he keeps a cane above his desk, and that he's mean and ruthless. Charlie, helps Tommo and stands up to Mr Munnings to protect his younger brother. Another example of when Tommo showed cowardice was when their new Sergeant (Hanley) came. Sergeant Hanley is a mean character, for this Tommo will do what he says when he says even if he hates him. Whereas Charlie is willing to stand up to him.

Hope this helps!!! :D
