Mary (Godwin) Shelley first started the drafts for The Modern Prometheus (Frankenstein) during the summer of 1816 while vacationing with Percey Shelley at Geneva, Switzerland. She was inspired by conversations their group (Percey, Lord Byron, and his mistress Claire Clairmont) had while housebound during frequent rains.
It is generally accepted that she shared some of the story there, because she was encouraged by those in the group to publish, which was done in 1818.
The Monster:The actual appearance of the monster can be debated. First one has to establish who is the actual monster. Is it victor or is it his creation? If Victor, the monster appears in the fourth paragraph and the final sentence of paragraph seven of chapter four:
