Anna Mary Robertson, 'Grandma Moses', was an American folk artist, remembered and celebrated specially because she was able to start and have a successful career as a painter despite her advanced age. It's reported that she started painting because she started developing Arthritis when she turned 76 years old, being an avid embroiderer, it became more and more difficult to her to manage the thread and needle, so one of her friends suggested her to start painting instead.
She was a Naive artist, meaning that she had not learnt from an art school or the like.

Grandma Moses was born in Greenwich, NY and grew up on a family farm there. Then she married Thomas Moses and moved to Virginia where she had 10 children five of who died at childbirth. She then resettled in Eagle Bridge, NY where she did her first painting. Her house called Mt. Nebo and farm are still there on Grandma Moses Rd. and are owned by Will Moses.
