Karen is living indepently in an accessable apartment in New Rochelle New York area and works as a receptionist for a catholic organization. Her parents have both died in the early 1990's - Marie from respritory ailments and Jimmy from Alzheimers. Gloria and Russ also passed away within three months of each other in 2001 and are survived by two sons. In the books Karen and With Love From Karen it was mentioned that Gloria and Russ had two daughters Mary and Evelyn. Sadly both girls, ages 9 and 7, parished in a house fire (the little red house Russ and Gloris moved into when they married). The fire was caused by an electrical short. Also killed in the fire was Little Marie's daughter, 7 year-old Michelle. Little Marie also has another daughter and two boys. Little Marie divorced her husband Ronnie Smiley (mentioned in the book With Love From Karen). She is remarried and her last name is now Irish. She still lives in upstate New York. Rory lives in Seattle, Washington area. Was married once, at least had a little boy Jason (there may be others but not sure how many) and then divorced. He is now remarried and has more children - I'm thinking three. Kristen is also married to her high school sweetheart Simon Viltz and they have at least one daughter who has become quit a high school gymnastic star. Kristin lives in Conneticut. The family home is still in Larchmont but is not owned by the family. There is a web site on Yahoo.com in the books section that is devoted to the Killilea family. They fan group has dug up year book photos of Gloria, Little Marie and Karen, newspaper clipping of wedding photos of Gloria and Little Marie, articles on the fire that killed the little girls, pictures of Karen and Gloria as adults, and many other little tid bits on the family. There was no miracle cure. Karen's disability is cerebral palsy. At the time when she was born, people assumed that any child with cerebral palsy would also be severely limited mentally, and the family was advised to institutionalize her. As explained in Marie Killilea's book "Karen" and the sequel "With Love From Karen," the Killilea family chose to raise Karen at home instead with as normal a life as possible, and proved that children with cerebral palsy can live normal lives and need not be mentally impaired.
