It lives in the chamber of secrets, which is under moaning Myrtle's bathroom at Hogwarts. many years ago, the basilisk killed myrtle in that bathroom. The Chamber of secrets is a chamber created bu Salazar Slytherin when he decided to leave Hogwarts, as he believed that the other creators (Rowena Ravenclaw, Godric Gryffindor, And Helga Hufflepuff) were not being selective enough in choosing the school's students. He wanted to only admit pure bloods, or those with only magical blood.
So he built a chamber deep under the school, and put a monster, the basilisk, in it. The chamber was said to be opened in the future by the true heair of syltherin , who would unleash the monster and eliminate all "mud-bloods" or those with some non magical blood.
The Plumed Basilisk (and other subspecies live in the tropical regions of Central and South America. I mean the lizard from the real world by the way.
