Shortly after one 'o'clock Hardy noticed that Nelson wasn't next to him. He looked over his shoulder and saw nelson kneeling. Then nelson looked up and smiled. "Hardy, I do believe they done at last, m y backbone is shot through"
He had been hit by a marksman fifty feet away. The bullet hit his shoulder pierced his lungs and stopped at his backbone. Nelson was carried away by some soldiers and they took him to a surgeon.
Nelson requested several times to see Hardy who was on deck supervising the war. Nelson told Hardy to give all of his possessions to his daughter, Emma. After that he said "Kiss me Hardy." Hardy bent down and kissed him on the cheek twice.
