In 1618, one of Queen Elizabeth I's court favourites, Sir Walter Raleigh, was executed by order of her successor, James I.
In 1603, after Elizabeth's death, Raleigh was sentenced to death for plotting against the new King (James did not like Raleigh), but this was commuted to imprisonment and Raleigh was sent to the Tower of London.
In 1616 Raleigh was released from the Tower in order to set out on an expedition to look for El Dorado, and a possible haul of gold. However, the expedition did not succeed and Raleigh also attacked the Spanish during this period, against the orders of King James. When he returned to England therefore, the death penalty came into force again, and Raleigh was subsequently executed.
Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex.
That was when Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded. She was executed for treason because of her involvement in the Babington Plot, which wanted to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I.
Assuming you are talking about Queen Elizabeth I of England: There were several modes of execution: -Beheading (this was the best option for the victim) -Starvation -Boiling in oil, water or lead (for poisners) -Hanging -Pressing -Hung, drawn, and quatered (for peope who had commited an act of treason) Elizabeth did take executions seriously and didn't enjoy having peope executed.
Richard Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, was a cousin of Elizabeth I and a personal favorite of the queen. However, due to Essex's frequent insubordination, rash temper and dangerous political enemies, he fell out of favor, launched a rebellion, was tried for treason and executed.
To be discovered plotting against the Queen would be high treason, and this was punishable by death.

Hopefully a Canadian citizen will weigh in on this question - but I do not believe that Canada has a death penalty any longer. Whether there is an exception for this particular crime, or not, I do not know.***EDIT****Yes you can be executed for treason in Canada, its the one thing you can be executed for.
