The Maiar are the helpers of the Valar, who serve the creator god Eru Iluvatar. Notable ones include the five who were sent down to Arda as 'wizards' (Istari), Gandalf the Grey ,Saruman the White, Radagast the Brown , and two Blue Wizards. Also there is Mailon, who was later known as Sauron. Also the balrogs are fallen Maiar who followed Sauron's old master, Melkor/Morgoth.

In the books there are a total of five wizards: Saruman the White Gandalf the Grey (later white) Radagast the Brown Alatar and Pallando, the two Blue Wizards who passed east and were never heard from again. Filming for The Lord of the Rings began in early 1999, giving everyone enough time to create and cast people and creatures. Filming finished entirely in June 2004 for the release of The Return of the King Extended Edition, completing five years of filming.
