Father John Lennon threatened to "take Julian off you, and send you back to Hoylake"; that is, seize custody of Julian and return Cynthia to her mother (who lived in Hoylake, across the Cheshire Wirral from Liverpool). He had spent little time with Julian though, being busy with The Beatles most of the boy's life, and it was natural for Julian to stay with Cynthia, who'd been there for him daily.
Cynthia ultimately won custody, with John getting visitation rights on weekends and vacations. The visits became rare after John moved to New York with Yoko Ono.
