Of course in the England of Shakespeare's day, everyone officially had the same religion: Church of England. However, people sometimes secretly and unofficially had other religious leanings, particularly towards Roman Catholicism or Puritanism. It was thought that Susanna Shakespeare was one of the latter. Her husband Dr. Hall seems to have had Puritan leanings, and she was fined for missing the official Church of England services, which Puritans often did.
